Caravel Quartet Caravel Quartet
Date Sunday, September 12, 2010
Location: Kleinert/James Arts Center, 34 Tinker Street, Woodstock, NY
Time: 2:00 pm
Cost: $10 for members, $15 for non–members
The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is pleased to present the Caravel Quartet, in a performance featuring the repertoire of Ukrainian composers, at the Kleinert/James Arts Center, 34 Tinker Street, Woodstock, NY on Sunday, September 12 at 2 pm. Tickets are $15/$10 WBG members. For more information or to order tickets contact the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, 845.679.2079 or go to www.woodstockguild.org.
The Caravel Quartet, comprised of violinists Amie Weiss and Kristi Helberg, violist Miranda Sielaff and cellist Jane Cords O’Hara, officially formed in 2008. Having played together for years in various combinations, all four are members of the dynamic New York City–based orchestra The Knights, a group whose recent engagements have included two recordings for the Sony Classical label and performances at the Dresden Musikfestspiele.
A love for performing and working together that sprang from the camaraderie of The Knights soon inspired these players to come together as a string quartet. The four musicians respectively have diverse experience in non–western and folk music styles – North Indian classical music studies, performances with Yo–Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, American folk and old–time music, experimental and multi-genre collaborations – all of which add to the breadth of the Caravel's repertoire and curiosity.
The Caravel Quartet has performed at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch in upstate NY, the Cornelia St. Café’s Serial Underground, the Winterfest Concert Series in State College, PA, and Manhattan's Museum of Biblical Art (Mobia) as part of a continuing residency in its Hearing the Sacred series. The group also recorded an album titled Night Has Descended, the musicians' own arrangements of children’s songs and lullabies from around the world. During 2010–11 the Caravel Quartet will feature repertoire of Ukrainian composers, which they will perform at Mobia in conjunction with the exhibit “The Glory of Ukraine” and at the Ukrainian Institute. Other projects include the premiere of a work by composer Dorothy Hindman entitled “Road to Damascus,” which was commissioned by the quartet.
This concert is sponsored in part with a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State agency. Additional Information

A Feast in the Forest Cornell Cooperative Extension of Greene County will be hosting its major fundraising event for 2010, A Feast in the Forest, on Sunday, September 19th from 1:00-5:00 p.m.
This event is very similar to the highly popular 50-Mile Harvest Dinner held for the past three years but this time we will be dining outdoors under a tent at the Siuslaw Model Forest located across from CCE’s Agroforestry Resource Center on Route 23 in Acra with a late summer view of the Northern Catskill Mountain range.
The event is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the great agricultural bounty of the region and the growing eat local movement with a menu featuring locally grown products that reflect both the history and the future of our regional culture and cuisine.
A delicious menu has been planned by local chef Marc Yanni of Yanni’s Restaurant. In 2009 Marc was named Chef of the Year by the Central New York Chapter of the American Culinary Federation. The dinner will feature tossed green salad with balsamic dressing, Caesar salad, curry carrot and white grape salad, cheese tortellini with tomato vodka cream, sautéed breast of chicken francaise, eggplant rollatini with three cheeses, sliced sirloin of beef with mushroom bordelaise and apple cobbler.
Join us for this unique experience and enjoy the music, local food and beautiful surroundings while supporting the programs of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Greene County’s Agroforestry Resource Center. The cost of the dinner is $75 per person or $140 per couple. For reservations, please call the office at 518-622-9820.
If you have special needs, please contact the office in advance. CCE provides equal program and employment opportunities.

Sporting Clays for Scouting The Rip Van Winkle Council of Boy Scouts has announced its second annual Sporting Clays for Scouting tournament will be held Friday, September 24th at the prestigious Orvis Sandanona Shooting Grounds in Millbrook, NY. This action-packed fundraising event coincides with the 100th Anniversary of Scouting in America and is being underwritten by the new Catskill Hudson Bank branch on Stockade Drive in Kingston. The tournament will serve to support more than 2,000 area youth active in the council’s Scouting programs.
Sporting clays has been described as “golf with a shotgun,” where clay targets are thrown in a variety of trajectories, speeds and elevations. “But you do not have to be an experienced shooter or even own a shotgun to participate in this event- it is for shooters and non-shooters alike,” said Scout Executive, Ray Braun. “Orvis instructors will be available at the shooting stations to assist novices and shotguns can be shared by teams, or rented at Orvis Sandanona,” noted Braun.
The Orvis Sandanona course is the oldest permitted shooting club in the country and was listed in Esquire magazine as one of the top ten courses in the United States. The cost of the tournament is $250 and participants will be served breakfast and lunch, and receive shells for the course. Scoring will be conducted using the Modified Lewis Class System, with prizes awarded for different skill levels. There will also be a raffle drawing for a 20-Gauge Elite Gold™ Collector’s Series Shotgun, donated by Smith & Wesson, as well as numerous other prizes.
All proceeds from the tournament will be used to directly support youth and Scouting programs in the Hudson Valley. The Rip Van Winkle Council provides leadership development programs for more than 2,000 area boys and girls through its Scouting and Explorer programs in Ulster and Greene counties. The council also provides year-round camping opportunities for Scouts and other community groups at Camp Tri-Mount, its 480-acre camping facility in East Jewett, NY.
For further information or to reserve a place in the tournament, contact the Council Scout office by phone at (845) 339-0846; by email at rabraun@bsa.org; or visit the council’s website at: www.rvwbsa.org.
